Well, let me tell ya, I ain’t never been the kind to care much ’bout them achievements in them games. You know, them little trophies and shiny badges folks go on and on about, like it’s some kinda big deal. Never understood why anyone gets so worked up ’bout ’em, to be honest. My whole life, I just played them games for fun, not to go collect a whole mess of awards for somethin’ I was already doin’—just tryin’ to have a good time.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I ain’t sayin’ them achievements ain’t a good thing for some folks. If you like to go after every last one of ’em, well, that’s your business. But me? I’ve never been the type to sit there and go outta my way just to get that one achievement that says “Hey, ya did somethin’ special!” Nah, if it happens, it happens. If it don’t, well, that’s fine too.
I reckon I been playin’ games longer than most folks would guess, and back in the day, there was no such thing as achievements. You just played ‘til you had enough, or ‘til the game made you mad enough to throw the controller at the wall—ha! But now, it’s like people care more about the little digital trophies than they do about actually enjoyin’ the game. I ain’t never been one for that.
Take somethin’ like Fallout 4. I’ve been playin’ it off and on for almost ten years now. Played it on all kinds of consoles, but you won’t find a single achievement for it on my Steam. Now, maybe I got a couple on my Xbox One from back in the day, but that’s it. And you know what? I don’t care. I don’t need no fancy achievements to prove I enjoyed the game. I played it ‘cause I liked it. Simple as that.
Some folks might say, “Oh, but gettin’ them achievements is what keeps the game interesting!” Well, maybe it does for some. But for me, if the game’s fun, it’ll hold my attention without me chasin’ after some little medal. I play ‘cause I like the story or the mechanics or just messin’ around in the game world. Achievements? They’re just some extra thing people worry about to make it feel like they’re really gettin’ somewhere, I guess.
I remember back when I first heard people talkin’ ‘bout them achievements. I didn’t even know what the heck they were talkin’ about at first! “You mean you get somethin’ just for doin’ the same thing you’ve been doin’ all along?” I thought. Seems a bit silly, don’t it? But I guess for some, that’s what makes games fun. Each to their own, I reckon.
Now, there’s some games out there where them achievements do make a bit of sense. Like, if you’re playin’ one of them roguelikes where you keep tryin’ to beat the game over and over, it can be kinda fun to aim for certain goals. That’s different, though. That’s a part of the challenge. But when it’s somethin’ like a little checkbox next to “Play the game for five hours,” well, that don’t seem like much of an achievement to me.
But, like I said, I ain’t here to tell nobody what to do. If them achievements make you feel good, more power to ya. I just ain’t one for all that extra fuss. I’d rather just enjoy the game as it is, without feelin’ like I gotta check off a list just to feel like I did somethin’ right.
And let’s not forget, sometimes them achievements can be downright frustrating! They make you do things you might not even enjoy, just for the sake of gettin’ a little medal. Like, who really wants to play the game on the hardest difficulty just to get an achievement? Ain’t no fun in that if you’re already enjoyin’ the game at your own pace. If you’re not havin’ fun, what’s the point?
Some folks seem to think that the more achievements they got, the better they are at the game. But I don’t buy into that. It’s not about how many medals you’ve collected. It’s about how much you’ve enjoyed the journey. If you’re just chasin’ after achievements all the time, you might miss out on what makes the game really special.
So, I guess what I’m tryin’ to say is that I don’t care much for them achievements, and I don’t think you should feel pressured to care about ‘em either. If you like ‘em, go for it. But don’t let ‘em take away from the simple pleasure of just playin’ the game. At the end of the day, it’s about havin’ fun, not collectin’ trophies.
